Outrageous Fortune & Go Girls Diversity

***SPOILERS FOR BOTH OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE AND GO GIRLS. WILL TALK ABOUT BOTH SHOWS IN ORDER SO YOU CAN SKIP ONE SECTION IF YOU HAVE ONLY SEEN ONE OF THE SHOWS*** I'll start with Outrageous Fortune first  Ok to start with i enjoyed Outrageous Fortune. It's like a mix of Shameless (UK) and The Sopranos with a solid cast of characters. Its nice that we have 4 major characters of Color (6 if you count Tracy in the first 2 seasons and Angel in the last 2 seasons) and 2 of them being Indigenous Maori characters (plus I liked how both this and the other show I'm mentioning how casual it is. I wish to see more casual rep of Indigenous characters here in shows and books in the US)  Although there is some issues  1. Kasey's specific ethnicity is never mentioned. It is mentioned she is Polynesian but the actress (Nicole Whippy) is Fijian (which is a Melanesian country) and while this isn't the biggest issue it would have been nice to see some rep for Fijian viewers to relate to

Nip/Tuck: How To Do Sexual Fluidity Right

*SPOILERS FOR NIP/TUCK*  Ok in one show I am currently watching there is a questionable storyline with a gay character which I am giving the benefit of the doubt for now. But it reminded me of a storyline in Nip/Tuck the tackles similar subject matter but does it right (in my view at least)  In one of the later seasons a character in the medical family drama Liz Cruz, who is a queer woman has a emotional fling with Christian Troy (One of the two main leads) and even marries him but.....like many of his relationships, it doesn't work out.  Now here's why an obviously problematic sounding storyline is done right and her thought provoking about the idea of sexual fluidity  Now what is sexual fluidity, the idea that anyone can be capable of being attracted to anyone. Now this isn't saying that sexual identities aren't real or that anyone shouldn't have them. Labels such as gay, bisexual, pansexual, etc. Are real and people should not forced to sleep with people they do

Why The Queer Representation In Power is Bad

*SPOILERS FOR POWER* Okay I have finished the Starz crime soap opera oh wait i mean drama Power To get one good thing about the show. It is good in racial & ethnic diversity. The cast is majority Black and Latino which is good for a premium network show (Though besides that not much else ethnic groups besides Mak, the show's basically token Asian character beside a East Asian mob that pops up in S2 or S3) Now why do i think the queer representation in the show is bad Well for starters all 3 major queer characters are in antagonistic roles. All three are Queer People of Color. And two of them die (Yup the bury your gays trope) and the third is only revealed as a lesbian (which was good in itself cause of how casual it was) in the last season because the writers figured that they barely had any queer characters. And she becomes a crooked cop out of nowhere besides being desperate. So while it may be not the worst representation of queer characters in media i have seen there was

Julien in The Shield

*SPOILERS FOR ALL 7 SEASONS OF THE SHIELD* Okay here's another rant for a show that I haven't shared to many people There is a character in a FX crime procedural The Shield named Julian Lowe. And he has one storyline for his character He's gay And how does his storyline play out T E R R I B L Y  After struggling for a while with internalized anti gay hatred he places himself into conversion therapy, forces himself to be straight and marries a woman. But guess what, that isn't the end of it. While trying to have a child he goes to a sperm bank and masturbates to gay porn and we have a scene where he aggressively reacts to a fellow cop named Tina when she says she has no problem with gay people and a brief scene that i didn't even remember until I went to the Wikipedia page to suggest he still had a desire to be himself......IN THE FINAL EPISODE!!!!!!! Wow. A great opportunity to have a good plot for a gay character dealing with anti gay sentiment and self hatred and

The Diversity in Misfits

**WARNING THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR ALL 5 SEASONS OF MISFITS!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED** OK i have been meaning to talk about this online for a while. Last year in March i finished Misfits cause i thought it was going to be removed off of Hulu (it hasn't) But after i finished it and did some thinking i came to a conclusion......The diversity in Misfits sucks To state, I am a white guy so i have plenty of privileges over many oppressed groups of people and i can't speak for a group i don't belong to but i will use my white privilege to call out instances of bigotry (whether blatant or subtle) Now let's start with the People Of Color. First off we have 3 main POC characters (Curtis, Alisha and Jess). All three are of (and for Alisha and Jess partial) African descent but notice that Curtis is basically the only dark skinned major Black character while for the Black girls (Alisha, Jess as well as Nikki who was a recurring character) are all bi-racial, light skinned gir
