Outrageous Fortune & Go Girls Diversity

***SPOILERS FOR BOTH OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE AND GO GIRLS. WILL TALK ABOUT BOTH SHOWS IN ORDER SO YOU CAN SKIP ONE SECTION IF YOU HAVE ONLY SEEN ONE OF THE SHOWS***

I'll start with Outrageous Fortune first

Ok to start with i enjoyed Outrageous Fortune. It's like a mix of Shameless (UK) and The Sopranos with a solid cast of characters. Its nice that we have 4 major characters of Color (6 if you count Tracy in the first 2 seasons and Angel in the last 2 seasons) and 2 of them being Indigenous Maori characters (plus I liked how both this and the other show I'm mentioning how casual it is. I wish to see more casual rep of Indigenous characters here in shows and books in the US)

Although there is some issues

1. Kasey's specific ethnicity is never mentioned. It is mentioned she is Polynesian but the actress (Nicole Whippy) is Fijian (which is a Melanesian country) and while this isn't the biggest issue it would have been nice to see some rep for Fijian viewers to relate to her

2. Angel's actor is played by a Cis Man. I don't care if it was 2009 it is still wrong then as it is now. Plus a Trans Woman played by a Cis Man gives off the impression that Trans Women as just "men in dress up" which is disgusting, Trans Women are Women. End of discussion

3. Judd. For most of the show he is a nice and generous guy with a good head on his shoulders until..........................he sleeps with Pascalle (Cheryl's daughter) which i hated! Not only fot completely subjective reasons (I'm not a "art is objective" type) but why go out of your way to have him not sleep with Cheryl's sister (who we have never heard of up until this point) only to have him have sex with Pascalle!!!! It not only comes off a racist because he is an Indigenous Maori man sleeping with a Blonde White Woman's daughter (who is also Blond and White) but also makes him come off as creepy because it's bordering on incest.

4. Also the other Trans character is played by a Cis actress and is vilified and antagonized (also to mention Loretta makes openly anti trans comments towards both her and Angel and is never called out or corrected). And there's only one gay character who pops up in like a couple episodes (and one in one episode where he threatens to expose Jethro lying about being Maori for a job and but gets silenced when he is revealed to be gay)

Ok now let's talk about Go Girls

I mentioned in my last blog I was watching a show with a questionable storyline with a gay character and this is the show

First off we start with Eli (a Polynesian athlete) rumored to be gay and then its confirmed he is gay but then when he comforts Cody (a female main character) guess what

He sleeps with her

And even falls in love with her and marries her

His boyfriend then gets upset and acts all possessive and creepy (also I'll talk about male entitlement in this show later) and then gives up. Sure Eli and Cody end up divorcing and he does end up happily with the boyfriend I mentioned (in a very interesting and arguably the best episode of the whole show) and also to mention Any (another one of the main characters) says that maybe Eli "turned" for Cody **major cringe** but in the episode i mentioned finally acknowledged that Bisexual people exist. Took them long enough!

Also Cody is the main Token POC (besides her daughter, father, A employee at her mechanic shop and some other minor characters) Alice is also the token in the 2nd cast (besides her mother (by the way that plot twist was so unnecessary) and a Maori guy who Bennie goes with and is an asshole

Ok so for male entitlement. Oh god

I H A T E D Kevin. I really fucking hated him. He was so whiny and entitled about Amy and overall a terrible person. Brad who was decent for a while ended up like Kevin in how entitled got towards Britta to the point of stalking, emotionally manipulated and even gaslighting her to call in love with him and he gets rewarded (sure they eventually break up but still) . Ted was less annoying but pretty naive.
